Stantec selected to design Metropolis at Metrotown redevelopment
STANTEC — Stantec has been chosen to design the Metropolis at Metrotown redevelopment project in Burnaby, B.C.

BURNABY, B.C. – Architecture and Engineering firm Stantec has been selected to design the Metropolis at Metrotown redevelopment project in Burnaby, B.C.

The project will change a large retail development into a city centre for Burnaby with the 35-acre site development phased and built incrementally. It will feature residential housing, street-front retail, an expansion of the current Metrotower office complex, public parks and new entertainment and cultural spaces, a Stantec release said.

Stantec will lead the development of the project’s mater plan as executive architect as well as guide an integrated design team.

“Pedestrian mobility and sustainable living would be prioritized in the design with extended bicycle routes and pedestrian pathways to encourage eco-friendly transportation through the site,” the release said.

An active transportation network including connections to the Metrotown SkyTrain station and BC Parkway is also planned.

The release stated the project will have a comprehensive sustainability approach, including optimization of resource flows, reduction of water consumption and regeneration of local ecosystems along with the introduction of green streets to significantly increase tree coverage.

The initial phase focuses on transforming seven distinct parcels located in the northwest, southwest, southeast, and eastern parts of the master plan, the release said.
