VANCOUVER — John Horgan is being remembered by BC Building Trades unions and their members.

The former B.C. premier passed away earlier this week at the age of 65 after his third bout with cancer.

To honour Horgan’s memory, BC Building Trades unions are donating $45,000 to cancer research in B.C. That’s $1 for every member.

Throughout his political career, Horgan was a friend to construction workers and a true champion of working people, states a release.

“John was a tremendous person and a brilliant political leader who was taken from us too soon,” said Brynn Bourke, executive director of the BC Building Trades Council, in a statement. “We hope this donation reflects our deep appreciation for his contributions to construction unions, the labour movement and B.C. as a whole.”

Horgan is the only politician to ever be named a lifetime honorary member of the BC Building Trades.

“John strongly believed that supporting unionized workers meant supporting families and supporting communities,” said Bourke. “He was a proud union ally and wasn’t afraid to say it.”

The donation to BC Cancer in his memory will contribute to those in B.C. facing their own experiences with the disease.

“This heartfelt tribute from the BC Building Trades Council reflects John’s legacy of advocacy and leadership,” said Sarah Roth, president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation. “This will help enhance BC Cancer’s care for families across B.C.”
