SIOUX VALLEY DAKOTA NATION, MAN. – The federal government is putting more than $2.9 million into increasing energy-efficiency and improving accessibility at the in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, Man.
The project aims to make the lodge a fully net-zero facility.
Solar panels and an energy efficient heating system will be installed along with HVAC upgrades to support a new heating system to better regulate building temperature.
Once complete, these improvements are expected to reduce the facility’s energy consumption by an estimated 104 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by 0.83 tonnes annually, an release said.
Funding will also go towards renovations to improve accessibility to the nursing station.
The federal government is investing $2.9 million into the project through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program. At least 10 per cent of GICB funding is allocated to projects serving First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, including Indigenous populations in urban centres.
