This week on the °µÍø½ûÇøion Record podcast digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with John Wall, an architect with Public: Architecture + Communication about Vienna House, a collaborative project that leverages cultural exchange between the City of Vancouver and City of Vienna to build sustainable construction projects.
Vienna House is in the planning stages but will emphasize both aesthetics and affordability in a social housing project with a light environmental footprint. Wall said Passive House standards help not only with energy efficiency but resiliency while dialing down the complexity of the structure.
Wall said the European approach to building is pragmatic and increasingly modular and Vancouver can adapt these ideas to local projects. He added Europe is further ahead in terms of social housing and engineered wood use while studying Vancouver’s regulatory and logistical approach may be of some value.
