COURTESY OF CARPENTERS LOCAL 27 — Rokhaya Gueye and Juliet Hall were recognized by the UBC with an Award of Excellence for their efforts to address diversity, equity and inclusion in the industry.

ST. JOHN’S — Rokhaya Gueye and Juliet Hall have been recognized with a United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) Equity Diversity and Inclusion Award of Excellence.

The awards were presented earlier this month in St. John’s, N.L.

The award recognizes mentors, mentees and employers who demonstrate exceptional leadership towards creating an environment of acceptance, equality and respect for all workers.

The award was handcrafted and designed to represent the UBC’s commitment to inclusivity and the collective efforts of members, employers and equity deserving groups.

“The wooden design of the award represents the diverse and interconnected roots of individuals and communities, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and valuing our unique backgrounds and experiences,” states the program. “The metal adds the strength of partnerships and the power of unity when working together to instil change. The design resembles a vibrant flame that symbolizes passion, energy, illumination and the transformative power of diversity initiatives.”

Gueye, a carpenter apprentice with 10 years of experience in construction, is the founding chair of the Sisters in the Brotherhood at Carpenters’ Union Local 27. She is also a certified coach and mentor, public speaker, community organizer and entrepreneur.

Hall is a carpenter and apprentice with Local 27 and is currently working towards becoming a Red Seal journeywoman. As a delegate for the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, she is an active member of several committees within Local 27 including the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Membership Action Committee and the SIB Committee.

Mosaic Transit ors (MTC) was also recognized for making efforts to ensure a more diverse and equitable workforce since it began the construction of the Finch West LRT in 2018. MTC’s internship program has provided new career opportunities for 18 workers from diverse cultures and backgrounds within the community.

Varni Tayalan, community relations specialist with MTC, spearheads outreach initiatives to raise awareness about employment opportunities for local residents looking to begin or transition into construction or the skilled trades.
