Skills Ontario supports reading, writing, math focus

Skills Ontario supports reading, writing, math focus

TORONTO — Skills Ontario has issued a statement supporting the Ontario’s government’s recent announcement that it would hire more teachers to focus on reading, writing and math in schools.

“These are key foundational skills to any career including rewarding careers in skilled trades and technologies,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario, in the release.  “We regularly hear concerns from employers that students lack these core foundation skills to be successful in today’s rapidly changing environment.  We are encouraged by these efforts to help students build these competencies, so they’ll have a better chance of success in their career journey.”

Skills Ontario also announced details of its upcoming Skills Ontario Competition. The event, which tests skills in 76 different skilled trades and technologies, is open to participants from elementary to post-secondary age.

The competition runs May 1 to May 2 at the Toronto Congress Centre, with a closing ceremony the morning of May 3.
